 Marijuana Legalization Measures Gaining Momentum In Several States

Lawmakers in several states have recently moved forward legislative proposals to either legalize or decriminalize marijuana-related activities. Here is a look at where some of these efforts currently stand. LEGALIZATION New Hampshire: By a margin of 209 to 147, House members voted late last week in favor of House Bill 481, which legalizes the possession and cultivate of personal use quantities of cannabis by adults, and establishes a licensed system of commercial production and retail sales.  Legislation to Regulate and Tax Marijuana in Vermont Passes Senate With Veto-proof Majority

A legislative proposal to tax and regulate marijuana for adult use in Vermont third and final reading in the Vermont Senate Friday with a veto-proof majority; the vote was 23 to 5.
The measure now moves to the Vermont House of Representatives for consideration. Passage in the House would send it to Governor Phill Scott for consideration. Senate Bill 54, sponsored by 15 of the states 30 senators, would create a system of regulated marijuana production and sales for adult use in Vermont, reports the Marijuana Policy Project in a press release. Retail sales would be subject to a 10 percent tax, and municipalities could establish a 1 percent local option tax if they host a retailer. In Congress this week Senator Cory Booker D-NJ, along with Representatives Barbara Lee D-CA and Ro Khanna D-CA, introduced The Marijuana Justice Act of 2019, to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and incentivize states to end the racially disparate criminalization of marijuana consumers. Today, the Vermont Senate passed S. 54 in a 23-5 vote. This bill would create a regulated and taxed market for cannabis in Vermont, allowing adults 21 and older to buy cannabis from retail stores instead of the illicit market.
