The first measure House Bill 2 legalizes and regulates marijuana possession, production, and sales for adults. The second measure Senate Bill 2 facilitates the automatic review and expungement of the records of those convicted of low-level marijuana offenses. Lawmakers approved both bills during a special legislative session demanded by Gov. Lujan Grisham, who had been a vocal proponent of the reforms. NORML State Policies Manager Carly W.... The governor of New Mexico on Monday signed a bill to legalize marijuana in the state, as well as a separate measure to expunge records for people with prior, low-level cannabis convictions. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham D gave final approval to the legislation, a key accomplishment for her administration after she listed legalization as a 2021 priority. Although lawmakers failed to pass a legalization bill before the regular sessions end last month, the governor convened a special session to ensure they got the job done. The legalization of adult-use cannabis paves the way.... View more in new window | April 6, 2021

With Washington State lawmakers weighing their options after a court ruling that struck down the states law criminalizing drug possession, legislation favored by reform-minded lawmakers received its first committee hearing on Monday. Senate Bill 5476 is one of at least nine measures introduced in response to the state Supreme Courts February decision, State v. Blake, and is widely seen as among the more likely of the bills to make it across the finish line before the legislative session ends on April 25. If passed, it would represent a shift away from the punitive drug war.... View more in new window

For those of you keeping score at home: On Tuesday, New York lawmakers passed legislation legalizing the adult-use marijuana market, and permitting for the personal use, possession, and cultivation of cannabis. Hours later, the Governor signed the bill into law with the provisions legalizing personal marijuana possession taking immediate effect. On Wednesday, Virginias Governor called for lawmakers to amend legislation in order to expedite the timeline for when Virginians can legally possess and grow .... View more in new window
